Hattie Wins GB Netball Gold at Maccabiah Games!

LANC player Hattie Grant (pictured extreme left, front row) was recently selected to represent Team GB at the 19th Maccabiah Games held during July in Israel. The Games are now the 3rd largest sporting event in the world, after the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, and take place every 4 years in Israel. The Maccabiah Games bring together Jewish athletes from around the world to take part in events from many sports such as rugby, gymnastics, cycling, athletics and rowing in junior, open and masters age groups. This year around 9,000 competitors from more than 70 countries took part, the GB delegation being made up of around 450 athletes.
In the u18 netball completion the GB team, captained by Hattie, beat Australia 47-44 in a tense and thrilling final. The GB team had narrowly lost to Australia on 2 occasions in the qualifying round robin matches. Wins against South Africa and Israel meant GB lined up against Australia in the final, Australia having won all their previous round robin games. This is the first time in the Maccabiah Games history that Australia have not gone home with double gold at both junior and senior levels.
Hattie was also awarded the Best and Fairest Player award in the u18 tournament.
Mention should also go to the team’s coach, Yorkshire Jets NPL Manager Vanessa McErlaine-Naylor, who coached the girls throughout the year prior to the Games and managed them superbly during the competition.
Head Coach Anna Carter commented, ‘It’s a great honour for Hattie to be selected to represent her country, and playing against squads from Israel, South Africa and Australia will have provided valuable international experience. Many congratulations to Team GB for winning the gold medal!’
