News Update #41

7/8/2018

We are supposed to be in the “off season”, but it doesn’t feel that way with so much going on!  In this final update, we round off for the 2017/18 season. We will start a new series of updates at the end of August, and from now we will only email these updates to athletes who have re-joined for the 2018/19 season.

Summer training – for U14 and over this is going well, with positive feedback. Athletes working hard, making new friends, and being ready for the season. For U11, summer training is also working well to get the groups sorted for September. Thanks, as ever, to coaches and admin helping to make these things happen!

National Performance League Tournament (NPL) – U21/19/17 – we had twenty of our athletes from the 2017/18 season appear in various franchise teams, with a number of former athletes also appearing as well. It was a great four days of top level age group netball, and everyone seemed to enjoy their tournament. Jan Hemsley, our Northern League coach, was LBoro U21 coach, and Francine Hall, our prem player, was also coaching Yorkshire U19 and U17. We also have a few athletes traveling to the School Games to represent Yorkshire in the National U15 competition – good luck – this promises to be an amazing multi-sport experience!

England Roses Academy Invitations – following the NPL tournament, Alice Harvey and Georgia Pexton have been invited to Roses Academy Camp at the end of August, with Annie James and Maisie Bickerton also invited to the selection day at the end of camp. Well done and good luck guys. Unlucky to those not invited on this occasion, big message is keep working hard if this is your ambition.

Leeds Rhinos Netball - in important local news, there has been a change in who delivers the formal England Netball Pathway in Yorkshire. Leeds Rhinos Netball applied for a Superleague Franchise for the 2019 season, but weren’t successful because of the ongoing issue of appropriate match night facilities locally. However, in recognition of the strength of the Leeds Rhinos Netball bid, they were awarded the opportunity to deliver the Pathway (which is currently being delivered by Yorkshire Netball). You can read about this on the Leeds Rhinos website https://www.therhinos.co.uk/2018/07/16/leeds-rhinos-netball-celebrate-first-year-anniversary/

Clubs are supposed to form an effective conduit to communicate with athletes about this kind of development, so we are keen to keep our athletes informed. We are aware that not all clubs are doing this proactively, so if you can share this information, please do.

We would encourage players to trial for Leeds Rhinos, where they qualify age wise and are keen netballers. This pathway activity complements Club activity and can complement existing County commitments as well. The pathway will replace the Yorkshire Squads that our athletes have been competing in this season. Leeds Rhinos Netball will be entering NPL competitions in the 2018/19 season for U17 and U19, and school games for U15. For more information, please visit the Rhinos Netball website. Academy Information is mostly out now, but with more to come during August, Hub information will be available from September.

Here are two useful links, with an email address for questions/more information. http://www.leedsrhinosnetball.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/http://www.leedsrhinosnetball.co.uk/performancepathway/

Australia Tour – on 1 August, 24 athletes and 3 adults left Manchester Airport for Brisbane in a long held vision for the Club to take a performance tour to Australia to help develop and inspire our athletes by seeing and playing against the best. So far, these athletes have had sessions with Leeds coaches, guest coaches, watched a top level game, played a local tournament/games, visited Seaworld, had a surf lesson on the Gold Coast, and had some down time to recover from jetlag!  They are having the time of their lives, working hard, playing hard, and making memories.

The tour moves to Canberrra to the Australia Institute of Sport (AIS) tomorrow for some serious focus on performance netball and learning in that super environment. They travel so Sydney and Manly! They have a few more matches, and some amazing sightseeing to do, and will hopefully be able to meet up with Natalie Haythornthwaite who is in Sydney.

A highlight so far was that Lauren McArdle got to take the match ball on court before the game between Firebirds and Magpies, which was also the famous Sharni Layton’s last game! Incredible. You can see more on twitter and facebook.

Huge thanks to Lisa Fox, who did the detailed planning for the tour before departure, and to Anna and Maggie for their hard work with the athletes on tour!  We are really confident that all the athletes will come back having improved, be ready for the season ahead, made some new friends and have some awesome shared experiences!

2018/9 Season – we are getting to the stage of being ready for the season. The Club handbook will be available soon, fees and any outstanding paperwork will be due, match fixtures will start to appear on the Google calendar, and we will be asking for team managers for each team etc etc! More to follow on this later in August for those who are re-joining us.

And finally……thanks very much to all our members and well done to everyone for a great 2017/18 season, with brilliant things happening both on and off court. Thanks to our coaches and volunteers who make all this happen and provide great opportunities for athletes to develop as players and as people. Let’s do it all again soon!!!!!!

This week our West Yorkshire Summer League team featuring lots of U16s in this senior league stormed the game against Huddersfield All Blacks 63-13. Well done girls.
In Netball Nights our NNB team continue to develop their game in this physical senior league. They took a narrow loss 27-31 to Shooting Stars but there was lots of learning. The NNA team won 32-18 v Thundercats keeping them at the top of the league.

WELL DONE
Huge congratulations to our coaches Anna and Maggie who have coached an amazing team at Loughborough Lightning to the Superleague Grand Final.  The semi final saw Loughborough Lightning leading narrowly from the start with an eventual score of 59-50 against a strong and hungry Manchester Thunder, winning using skill and intelligence over physicality. The club is so proud of our coaches’ achievements, remember to support them on Saturday  7th July in the final against Wasps. Watch live at the Copper Box or on Sky Sports 5pm. Or take a trip to London!

News Update #39

26/6/2018

PERFORMANCE
The NNA team had a resounding win this week 29 v
15 v Victorious Secrets. This team has a great mix of players from our top athletes in Premier 1 and often some U14 s, it is a great experience for our young players performing with such experienced athletes. Our NNB team had a narrow loss, they are building towards success in the junior leagues using Netball nights to develop their game and find challenging opposition which is not always available in junior matches. The West Yorkshire Summer League team smashed it on Saturday beating Calderdale 58 v 9 ensuring they stay at the top of the league table.

AWARDS EVENING
A massive thank you to everyone who helped at our awards night on Friday, from flower buyers to sausage servers it was great team work just what Leeds Athletic does well. Michelle Barker-Field deserves a special mention at this point, she was overall responsible for putting on the event, taking the IT presentation to a different level with detailed information and photos of all the award winners. Our thanks to you Michelle, great job.
Most of our coaches spoke at the event including Anna and Maggie for which we are very grateful considering the big match in their diaries the next day with Loughborough Lightning.  Anna made an inspirational speech about using your obsession for netball to achieve success.

SPECTATE
The semi finals of Superleague 2018 are upon us. First place Wasps and second place Loughborough Lightning get the home draw, to be played on Saturday 30th June. Wasps v Team Bath is on Sky Sports at 5.45pm or you could watch live Loughborough Lightning v Manchester Thunder in Leicester.  Good luck to Anna and Maggie with Loughborough and our past and present players with Bath and Wasps. It’s all building up to a fantastic grand final on the 7th July at the Copper Box in London.

UMPIRING COURSE
Leeds Athletic held their first Umpiring course on Sunday, the England Netball Official C award course was delivered by Elaine Douris. Twelve potential umpires were put through their paces, theory in the morning and practise papers. The practical element, umpiring a match was in the afternoon when 16 very helpful young guns came along to play for the “would be” umpires to practise their newly acquired skills. There were a couple of cheeky games where the youngsters had the opportunity to play with some of the older girls.

CONGRATULATIONS
Well done to Hannah Moulds and Claudia Stead being selected for Loughborough U17 NPFL and Erin Hodgkiss and Lucy Alexander being selected to the Loughborough U19 NPL squad. Well done to Chloe Smith, Anya Wood and Chloe Essam, being selected for Loughborough U21s. This is in preparation for a four day tournament at the end of July when franchises battle with each other. Yorkshire are soon to announce their squads for this tournament, good luck to our players who are trialling.
SUMMER TRAINING - details are contained in update #38.
thanks

PERFORMANCE
Our amazing U12 team WON the Regional tournament at the EIS Sheffield on Sunday. They won some games by some big margins, with just a couple of close games and one draw, eventually winning the competition on goal difference.
Coaches John and Meghan were thrilled with the performances, some good reward for the season’s hard work! This makes our U12s Regional Champions the top accolade for teams in this age group. Big shout out to Catriona Astbury who kept everyone updated on our Facebook group with scores and performances throughout the day, thank you.
On Wednesday our young NNB team faced Jets who provided fierce and mature opposition, they lost, but there was lots of learning as ever for these youngsters playing senior netball.
The Summer League girls were disappointed to have their match cancelled due to exam desks still set up in the sports hall. This match will be played on the 21st July.

Anna and Maggie had another victory with LBoro Lightning on Saturday, the tenth in a row, assuring them of a top 4 spot. Good luck to all our players and former in NSL as we head towards the last games before semis etc.

As the current generation of England’s Commonwealth Games-winning netball players garner all sorts of praise and promise, Leeds Athletic Netball Club meanwhile sees a mixture of the sport’s past and future stars all aiming to reach new heights.

Two of them are former England player-turned-Leeds-coach Maggie Birkinshaw and England Under-17 vice-captain, Georgia Pexton, who both also coach and play at Super League side Loughborough Lightning/U21 owing to Yorkshire not yet having a Super League franchise.  CLICK HERE for the full report.

The Superleague is hotting up but no matches in our extended area this week. No televised matches until 11th June. Try looking on Sky mix (121) for Australian and NZ netball. Some of our players have still been appearing in NSL matches, and pathway matches, so well done to them. Another well done to Anna and Maggie with another good win for Lightning at the weekend against a strong Severn Stars. Great to see so many of our players travelling to watch NSL matches, eg Manchester Live, as it is such a good way to learn. Here is a recent article about the growth of netball and NSL, for anyone who hasn’t already seen it.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/2018/05/22/premier-league-football-clubs-could-hold-key-netballs-future/

News Update #35

29/5/2018

A quiet netball week – that is unless you are an U14 player or supporter, or at the Wasps vs LBoro game on Saturday night! We must be getting close to the season end given we are on update #35!!!!

Planning already underway for our 2019/2020 season, although some of our approach will depend on the outcome of Super League and whether a franchise is secured for Yorkshire. We are hopeful that the impact on athletes and coaches won’t be the same as last season, you will have picked up from Twitter that Anna Carter has resigned from LBoro and will be focussing on netball closer to home.

WELL DONE
Our U14s gave their all in a true team effort at National Club Finals this weekend coming 11th in the country, this is a massive achievement and the experience is unforgettable, well done girls. Congratulations to coaches Libby Hodgkiss and Lisa Driver who have developed this young team throughout the season. Many thanks for brilliant organisation from Susanne Beale team Admin and Erin Hodgkiss assistant coach. Great teamwork too from all the amazing parent supporters especially those with the responsibility for scoring, water bottle duty, and tweeting.

Reflecting on the last few years of Nationals, it is worth noting our consistent qualification and our reasonably consistent finishes. This is the same with our U12s at the Regional Competition, we have always qualified, often won or finished in the medals.
Picture
However, as everyone knows, the competition at that level is tough, no easy games, very different to what our girls are used to, and arguably getting harder every year, meaning we need to up our game season after season as well, and do this within the broader context of a strong pathway.

‼TRIALS‼
Due to a venue issue senior trials will now be held on 5th July not 28th June. PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT TRIAL ENTRY DEADLINES ARE APPROACHING FAST!!  GET YOUR ENTRY IN IF YOU WANT TO PLAY FOR US NEXT SEASON! There won't be lots of scope for late trials. Do remember to read trials information carefully to ensure you are fully prepared to help get the best possible outcome for yourself or your child. Eat well, sleep well and check you have your bag packed with essentials in advance. Contact Susie Stead susiestead@hotmail.com if you have any queries, eg late trial etc.

PERFORMANCE
There was no summer league this week, but both teams had matches at Netball Nights on Wednesday. The NNA team had a super win 45 - 14 v Titans outside on a lovely summer evening and the young NNB team lost 19 -31 to a strong Thundercats team. Super learning for this very young side, just getting used to playing in this adult league.

AWARDS EVENING
Tickets are still available for the end of season awards evening from team admins. Any club member and families are welcome. It is a great opportunity to meet your team members, mix with other age groups, get a better understanding of how the club is structured and see the players and coaches often mentioned in these updates. It is a fun evening with food included in the ticket and a cash bar. Everyone is welcome.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to our coaches Anna and Maggie who pulled off an awesome win Loughborough Lightning against league leaders Wasps in Superleague on Saturday, at Wasps Ricoh arena with a sell-out crowd. Few of our current and former athletes in action across both sides, and particularly sisters Rosie and Lucy Harris appearing in opposite sides!

SPECTATE
Live on Sky Sports
Monday 28th May 7pm
Surrey Storm v Severn Stars.
Saturday 2nd June 2.15pm
Manchester Thunder v Wasps – big game at Manchester Arena.
Go to watch on Saturday 2nd June in Newcastle, Team Northumbria v Celtic Dragons 6pm  or Loughborough Lightning hosting Severn Stars starting at 7pm. Some of our players will be appearing at the pre-match for this game in an U19 vs U21 game.

#ShowUp
This newsletter is designed to keep our members informed about club matters, performance and celebrations. This year it has been used to encourage our members to watch our sport live in Superleague, the performance pathway and club matches. It is a great way to enjoy sport as a family, to develop player and parents understanding of the game, improve performance and have fun for little or no cost. Junior players particularly benefit from watching.
Sky Sports recognise these sentiments and are giving away over 5000 tickets this summer to view women’s sport. It’s about getting people along to events to see what they're like, to drive that conversation. And a change in culture, in getting people to follow more regularly, boosts engagement and participation amongst people of all ages. Included in this initiative Sky Sports and the Women’s Sport Trust are asking you to take to social media and let them know how you are going to show up, what are you attending or going to watch this summer? #ShowUp @SkySports @WomenSportTrust This campaign complements the Campaign in Australia called #WakeUpNetball There have been some cracking matches to watch over there, including those featuring some of the Roses.

And finally.....

We are just checking that we can still communicate in this way in light of the new GDPR.

Great start to the summer league season for our young side who won their first league game with Susie as the coach, well done everyone, especially those making their debut who were well supported by our more experienced athletes!

Trial entries are coming in thick and fast, ready for trials in June. The eform is on the Trials Tab on the website, closing dates are a few days before each trial. Try and make sure you enter before the end of May if you can, just because it makes the administrative side a bit easier, thanks.

End of season awards is coming up on 22 June, see you age group admin for tickets, and earlier updates for details.
Netball Nights Our NNA (u16 and some seniors) played our NNB (U14) last week. NNA got the win, but some great netball on show from both sides and great preparation for our U14s heading to nationals! Well done all.

U14 Nationals squad continue their preparation for nationals, hotels are booked, kit is being ordered, jobs are being handed out, and the paperwork has been submitted! U12 Regionals squad continue their preparation ready for the Yorkshire tournament in June, including doing well in a North West tournament this week with 5/6 wins. U11s have a tournament coming up soon as well.

The Australia Trip is getting closer, and the excitement is building!

Summer training will be opening soon, watch this space for details. It will run in July and August.

We have our umpiring course coming up in June. It is £45 and involves the course plus some supervised practice. We also hope that Yorkshire will be offering an additional Level 2 training course that will be more accessible for players because the dates coincide less with fixtures and players will be able to take the course.
