News Update #23

A superb weekend of netball for our youngsters, with two U12 teams doing well in the Chorley tournament on Saturday and four u11 teams competing in the WY tournament on Sunday (with two of these teams appearing in the final!). Particular thanks to John and Becky for all their efforts and to parents who helped.

Looking ahead, we hope to have trial information out quite soon. We are going to trial in the next few weeks on an evening for next year’s U12/14/16. Watch this space for information and application process; it may have a fast turnaround! We are hoping to provide training opportunities through the summer as a new development this season.

Awards evening – please let Tim Barber know if you want to attend the awards but haven’t got a ticket tim@light-fish.co.uk 19 May 2017 at Thorner.

Good luck at Nationals to our U16s who represent the Club at Nationals this weekend in Essex, good luck to the squad and coaches (Anna and Maggie). Competition will be tough with the top 18 clubs in the country. We will do our best to update you on Social Media. Our U12 also have a friendly this weekend against Allus. Next weekend sees our Prem squad in playoffs in Nottingham.  #netballneverstops!

We are entering a team into the Senior WY Summer League, Susie is organising and Kirsty is player coach. Good luck to the team, which is a mixture of seniors and U16. We are also entering two Netball Nights teams into the Summer League, for U14 and above to play into this adult league. Please get in touch with Mark maboocock@sky.com if you want to play.

There is a lot going on in Netball as the game transitions to a more professional status at the top level. There will be an impact for younger athletes as there will be changes to the pathway because of the new SuperLeague Franchises, who have been given responsibility for leading the pathway. We await information from Yorkshire Netball about what will be happening locally, because we have no franchise, and will keep you posted as soon as we hear anything.

Well done to our current members who are playing in their respective SuperLeague franchises, Bath, Wasps and Team North, with a busy Easter weekend of fixtures! Good luck also to our athletes featuring in Loughborough U21 NPL squad. I hope that people are managing to watch some SuperLeague, even though Yorkshire no longer has a franchise. Loughborough, Team North and Manchester are all reasonably accessible and reasonably priced tickets.

Our U14A and 16 squads qualified for Nationals in style last weekend, both unbeaten in this regional campaign so clear league winners and both with very very impressive goal differences. U16 preparation is in the final stages, as they go off to Essex on 28 April. U14 have a bit longer to prepare with their competition at the end of May. Other age groups are entering tournaments, so keep in touch through social media! Good luck to everyone!

We will also be wishing our Premier League Squad best wishes soon as they head to playoffs at the beginning of May!

We have collected deposits for our Australia trip, and are in the process of confirming the booking. We have a Garden Party planned for those attending so that people can get to know each other well in advance of the trip! Exciting times!

We have 3 athletes attending England Camp next week, Natalia K, Georgia P and Laura K (all from U16). Good luck to them! Our younger athletes have been attending camps and regional playdays, or been away on school tours!

There are Elite Netball Camps on over May Spring Bank Holiday - four Masterclasses, as follows, for age 11 to 14 years of age. £35 per Masterclass - £110 for the full week. Visit the website to book.

Tuesday 30 May

Wednesday 31 May
Attacking with Anna Carter & Lucy Dudley
Thursday 1 June
Fitness, Skills & Drills with Jan Hemsley
Friday 2 June
Tournament Day with Jan Hemsley & Olivia Memmolo

Don’t forget to get your ticket for the Awards evening from your age group admin, £5, Friday 19 May.

Age group admin will keep you posted about training dates, and I will be in touch soon with everyone about trials and summer opportunities! Thanks again to all the age group admin help, the club couldn’t run without you! And a special mention to Becky Harris who has sorted all our Premier fixtures this season, which is quite an onerous task!

It continues to be busy!

End of the season – or not!
Well, Sunday marked the end of the season for many of our squads and athletes, although as we know Netball is an all year around game now, so not everyone is finished! However, it is worth reflecting what has been achieved by our Club during the season so far. Here’s a quick summary:
  • WY U11A crowned Hi 5 champions and unbeaten, with our U11B third in the table
  • U12A WY champions and unbeaten, with our U12B third in the table and our U12C (who are really U11!) league champs of second division and another unbeaten team!
  • U14A & U16 West Yorkshire qualifiers to Regional League and both squads one win away from being unbeaten Regional champions and qualifying for Nationals, with U14B 3rd in the Top WY league (having also supported the U14A with players)
  • West Yorkshire Senior SuperLeague champions and unbeaten in this very competitive and high standard senior league
  • Top 4 in Senior Regional League
  • 3rd in Northern League
  • Top half in Netball Nights
  • Qualified for Prem play offs to, with a chance to stay in National Premier League 1
  • With lots of our U16 playing in the WY/Regional/Northern/Netball Nights squads and many of our U14 players playing Netball Nights
  • Trip to Australia planned for 2018 for current U14/16 squads and Disney trip being planned for 2018 for current U12
  • money raised for Net10 charity, Easter Egg Raffle and U11 tournament delivered for other local teams
  • Representative honours still way too many to mention!!! But…in summary 2 of our athletes in the National Academy, with another 2 identified as “potential”; quite a few athletes in SuperLeague sides; the bulk of the Yorkshire NPL squad from Leeds Athletic and 4 of our athletes in Loughborough Lightning U21 squad. Most of our athletes who are eligible are in RA/RPA/Elite/County/District etc etc!
  • And our coaches are also active here, with many having done Yorkshire NPL, Maggie doing LBoro SL Squad, and Anna/Jan doing LBoro U21 squad. Susie got her L2, and some U16 doing their L1 in summer.

Still to come….

Summer Netball Nights league starts May and we have two teams entered to give lots of athletes opportunity; Summer WY Saturday League starts soon; U16 Nationals 29/30 April; Premier League Playoffs 6/7 May; U14 Nationals 27/28 May. Summer tournaments are also being organised for some age groups. And, we are looking to organise Summer training, but not yet sure on detail!
If you are in U14 or over and fancy playing in Netball Nights or WY Summer League, please let Susie or Mark know (addresses on website!).

Thanks….
There are too many people to list to say thank you for the efforts running the club and providing opportunities for so many athletes to develop week in week out. Whilst we know the Club isn’t perfect and doesn’t always meet everyone’s needs, we do also know that we are delivering some great stuff. I am at least going to thank:
  • the coaches for their delivery of all the sessions and matches (many senior matches are 12 hour days with the travel, many coaches cover more than one team) with our athletes and all the behind the scenes planning and athlete management that gets players on court each week and helps them develop to fulfil their potential (Anna, Maggie, Jan, John, Rochelle, Becky, Lucy, Mark, Susie, Lisa, Michelle)
  • the committee & main age group admin for their tireless work “organising stuff” be that squads, facilities, umpires, match fees, friendlies, safeguarding stuff, CAPS stuff, disputes, website, kit bags, social evenings, club finances, affiliations, registrations etc etc   (Mark, Susie, Louise, Helena, Jo, Sian, Jan, Alison, Tim – and Hannah for Netball Nights)
  • all parents for their relentless taxi, bank, restaurant and laundry facilities – to name a few
  • all the athletes for their hard work and commitment to training and matches!

Presentation evening…..

So let’s all buy tickets for the awards evening to celebrate this wide range of activity and achievement, 19 May, available from your age group admin! Come and support the club and get involved!

Injuries….
Inevitably at this time of the season we have what always seems like more than our fair share of injuries and athletes recovering from longer standing injuries……we know it is hard being “out”, but it is important that you still feel connected to club etc, so we are sending our thoughts to you again with fingers crossed for lots of speedy and sustained recoveries!!!

Code of conduct reminder….
Bit like a broken record, but please think about what you’re saying to athletes/coaches/other parents or the opposition whilst watching, please be respectful and think about the impact a comment can have. As a rule, it is better to say nothing than for one of our athletes to be upset or one of our teams to be penalised and lose points because the opposition complain that we have

Is it all worth it….
As I have said before, I think all those involved in running the club sometimes question why we bother given it takes so much time and effort and sometimes for very little reward. However, days like Sunday can make it all very worthwhile and rewarding for those on and off court!  With eleven teams playing on that one day; probably not far off 100 athletes taking to the court, being with their friends doing something they love, learning, performing and smiling; too many goals to count; the majority of teams winning and some with quite dramatic consequences (like Premier qualifying for playoffs by just one goal) and a range of brilliant performances; seeing the pictures on Facebook across the age range from U11 to seniors; the coaches seeing things executed that they’ve been working on all season…….etc etc! You get the picture!

And finally….
Take the kids to watch the Final Four in Manchester, or the Fast5 in London, or to a SuperLeague game, or enter them into Elite Netball Centres, if you want them to learn more about the game.

Thank you
Mariana
