News Update #32

30/4/2018

Performance
Well, our awesome U16s had a rollercoaster day on the first day of National Clubs Netball Finals, the pinnacle of junior netball, closing the day having secured a brilliant top six placing and all to play for the next day. The opposition were Oldham, Turnford, Bury, Charnwood Rutland and Eagles nothing was going to be easy. The girls put out amazing performances on Sunday, better than the previous day, losing only by two in both morning matches against very stiff opposition. Final standing 6th best club team in the country. Congratulations girls.  Many thanks to lead coach Maggie Birkinshaw, supported by Susie Stead and Libby Hodgkiss, Admin Rachel Train, all parent helpers, and Georgia Pexton joining to lend her experience for day 2 - a true team effort that the Club is proud of!
Fabulous experience for the girls with memories to last a life time.

In other performances this weekend:
Massive congratulations to LANC U12A who became West Yorkshire League Champions by beating Wakefield Wildcats by 36-11 in the last game of the season. Well done girls what an amazing season, into the serious preparation now for the Regional Tournament, the pinnacle of competition at this age group.

Hi five U11s lost to 6-10 to Terrier Tots 1 a brilliant game despite the score.  U12 LANC D lost to Wakefield Phoenix in a close game 5-7 brilliant for our youngest players in this age group. Our U14B West Yorkshire squad lost to YMCA 30-23 in a hard fought battle. OurU16B West Yorkshire team should have played two games supported by some talented U14s as numbers were low due to players involved in Nationals. The first match was cancelled so the team went out for breakfast-great idea guys. The second match against YMCA resulted in a win 28-23 excellent result girls it must have been the Weetabix!!

What an amazing week!! It seems that the country has suddenly realised how brilliant our game can be, thanks to our England Roses. Unprecedented media attention nationally, and locally Anna Carter and our U14s starred in Look North on Friday night. They all did an amazing job of looking good and speaking well. We are very proud of you girls, of Anna, with Tanya Arnold paying credit to the attitude of our girls, well done.

Performance
NNB had another close match on Wednesday night this time losing by two goals 25-27, a good opportunity to learn. There was no match for NNA this week.

Our Northern team lost narrowly in their final match of the season against 44-47 Oaksway, with a few players missing this was a tough one. However, this squad have had had the most amazing season and are already league Champions, well done girls and Coach Jan Hemsley.

Congratulations to the U14s who secured a place at the National Club Finals by beating Huddersfield Giants 29-25, they are unbeaten league winners. There is now just over a month of training to prepare for the weekend event in Newcastle. How exciting, for many of these girls it will be their first nationals. Well done Libby and Lisa.

The U16s had already qualified for Nationals but pulled off a 60-26 win in their last Regional league match against Shipley, that’s without four defenders can you believe, two injured and two on D of E. Special get well soon wishes to Ailsa and Isabella. Thanks and well done to Maggie and Susie, the league victory achieved in impressive style.

In Hi 5 our mini netballers played Terrier Tots 2 coming up with a fantastic win 12-3.
The U12 LANC D team had a brilliant game against Birkenshaw Belles resulting in a 28-15 win with guest coach Becky Hewson. Well done to the usual coach, Lucy Dudley, finishing the hottest ever London Marathon. The U12 LANC C team played Terrier Tots 1 winning 18-10 great score girls.
Finally for this week the U14 West Yorkshire team beat Wakefield Wildcats 25-12 and posted some great photos on the Facebook group well done girls.

Some of our athletes appeared for Yorkshire against Thunder, this weekend as well, great experience. Well done to our athletes competing in Super League competitions, and to coaches Anna and Maggie for their victory with LBoro Lightning.

We’re getting to high numbers now, in these updates, at #30 we must be getting close to the end of the
Club Season!

Roses make history!
Did you make the effort to wake up at 6am to see the amazing come back from England v Jamaica on Saturday? It was well worth it for the tense final stage alone, and to see Leeds Athletic’s Nat Haythornthwaite, who was coached by Anna for all her early career, lift the team making an outstanding impact on the game. Then the 4am on Sunday the final WOW.
Congratulations to our talented England Roses we should be so proud of their GOLD MEDAL winning performance against world number ones Australia on their home ground. It has been coming, the England performance pathway has been developing our young talent, it is now starting to produce results. From beating New Zealand in the early rounds, coming top of the group and never giving up when facing Jamaica in the semis and then Australia they have been fabulous, well done England Roses.

So “the tables have turned”, “history has been made”, “gamechanging moment for netball in England”, “one of THE moments of the Commonwealth Games”…..are just some of the phrases that have been mentioned. This is an amazing platform for the game to increase its professional approach, and really be able to inspire even more athletes, not least in the run up to the Word Cup in Liverpool next year. The media profile is incredible.

Performance
There were two wins for our Netball Nights squads on Wednesday. First up was NNA a challenging match v Thundercats with an eventual score line of 39-26. NNB beat Shooting Stars in a close one 21-20 an amazing result for mainly U14 athletes, thanks to Molly Dexter supporting the young guns by playing this week. On Sunday the U14 and U16 teams hosted a friendly at GSAL for Nationals preparation against Oldham, organised by Libby Hodgkiss.

Training
There are a variety of arrangments for training for the next few weeks, which will be confirmed group by group.

End of Season Event
Behind the scenes Michelle Barker-Field and helpers are planning a fabulous end of season celebration on Friday 22nd June. Get tickets from your team admin as soon as possible. Last year was a great success so don’t miss out.

Well there has been less Club activity than usual on the netball courts recently, although some players have had NPL commitments. Let’s hope players are well rested ready for the Nationals and tournament season ahead. Meanwhile, I am sure plenty of us will stay up late tonight to support Eng vs NZ! Thank you to those who have signed the petition to encourage the BBC to show more netball, more than 10,000 signatures in less than 24 hours, showing the #netballfamily!

Performance
  • Congratulations to our West Yorkshire Senior team beating Alliance 57-38 and be crowned as West Yorkshire Netball Superleague winners.
  • In the first fixture of the summer Netball Nights league for our NNA team there was a storming performance by a strong squad to beat Victorious Secrets 41-16. NNB match was postponed.
  • The Northern team came out with yet another win against Sheffield Stormers. Not sure what the team had for breakfast but it was a tremendous score 72-27. They are unassailable Champions, although there are games left in the league.
  • The young young guns had a super tournament organised by Mark Boocock, Becky Hewson, with support from Georgia Pexton starting early on Sunday morning. Lots of talent on show from our future athletes and a brilliant fun packed morning was had by all. Lots of smiles on show!
