News Update #8 - Weekend Report

24/9/2017

Results today……great start today in seniors. Win for Prem vs Academy, win for Northern vs Riverside, and for U16s vs Fusion. U14B had a tough first match to start the season vs Giants A and lost, but with plenty of lessons to take away and play to build on. As usual, thanks to all the coaches and helpers who made sure everyone in right place at right time etc today! Never easy for these first few fixtures. Particular thanks to younger players and parents who came along to support our Prem side today, great game to watch and learn!

We are mindful that some players will feel they haven’t had the opportunity to play yet, it is fair to say that our fixtures are getting off to a slow start this season and so opportunities are limited. Don’t worry, we will soon be inundated with fixtures and people will get more opportunity!

Well done to Maggie Birkinshaw as Assistant coach at Fast Five with Loughborough Lightning yesterday. Plenty of our former and current players on court across the various franchises, which was great to see!

Please can anyone who hasn’t yet paid their fees make sure they pay this week – think it is mainly some U12 and some seniors. We will get to the stage where players can’t take to court if they don’t pay, which would be a shame. Thanks to the prompt payers in U14 and U16!

More Netball Nights fixtures on Wednesday this week. Next weekend sees our first WY Senior match on Saturday against the very strong Hi Tech, and in seniors on Sunday we have Northern League against Concord (get along to Beckett 12:30pm to watch if you can). In Juniors, we have five teams out – U16, both U14 and two U12! Busy Sunday! Squads will be out asap, but for some it will be after training on Thursday.

Parent meeting for U12 on Thursday at the start of training.Think that is it for today…..thanks to parents for posting on Facebook, please keep the good work up sharing out who updates o that everyone across the Club knows what is happening with other teams.

Update #7 - Midweek Special – Important Announcement

21/9/2017

Loughborough Lightning have just announced Anna Carter as Head Coach of their SuperLeague squad, last year’s SuperLeague champions, and Maggie as the Lightning assistant coach for Lightning for the second year running. Many of you will be aware that Karen Atkinson is leaving Loughborough to move to Italy with her family. This is very exciting news for Anna and Maggie as coaches, for Yorkshire as a region, for Leeds Rhinos Netball and for us as a Club. For us as a performance club that is already achieving a lot and has big ambitions, we need club coaches who are coaching at the highest level of the sport. Anna and Maggie will be working with national and international athletes on the run up and following the Commonwealth Games.

First of all, I am sure we all want to congratulate both Anna and Maggie on their appointments, a huge credit to them and as a Club we are really proud of them. These roles will be brilliant to support their personal development as coaches, being part of a university recognised for its sporting excellence. Our athletes benefit hugely from these coaches and the context they create, this is one of the things that sets us apart as a performance club.  As we have seen from the last year, Loughborough has also opened new opportunities for our athletes, particularly at U21 level, which has really benefitted those athletes.

You will appreciate that we are working through the implications of this news for the Club, and indeed will be doing so when SL fixtures are published.

We expect Anna to continue to play the role as our head coach, but clearly she will not be able to do as much delivery – training and prem games – particularly as the SL season gets closer. For seniors, we are lucky to have Jan who coaches on a Thursday and is a very experienced performance coach, with a great season with Loughborough U21 last year also under her belt. We also have senior experienced athletes who can lead teams. Maggie will continue to coach U16s Thursday sessions throughout the season and oversee Sen Regional and WY Seniors, but some delivery will be impacted during the SL season. We will know the specific impact more once SL fixtures are published. We are lucky that we have Susie as assistant coach for U16, and experienced senior players who can lead our senior regional and WY senior squads on match day. There is less of an impact on the younger age groups at the Club where we will have continuity from our range of excellent coaches.

We will keep you posted with developments. I am not at training much this week, because I am going to support our colleagues who are launching the Leeds Rhinos Women's SuperLeague Rugby team, but I will be around the following week or you can email me if you have any questions.

Good luck to all those playing at the weekend, across junior and senior fixtures. We had two wins and one loss last weekend in Juniors. Well done to those selected into Rhinos academies, for those who didn’t don’t give up, work hard and bounce back.

Squad Lists and Good Luck!

Very best of luck to all our juniors playing in matches today, we have three teams out (U16 and two U14). U12 start their matches next weekend, along with most senior teams. Particular good luck to those taking to the court for Leeds Athletic for the first time, wear that black and blue with pride and do your best! Thanks to coaches and helpers!

Good luck to all our athletes who are trialling at Leeds Rhinos Netball this weekend and to any awaiting the outcome from other trials. Good luck as well to our athletes on England Camp with National Academy this weekend – Laura Kelly, Natalia Karkoszca, Alice Harvey, Georgia Pexton, and Chloe Essam. Best of luck to Annie James who has been invited to Camp after the recent tournament.

Squad lists for the first half of the season will be put on the website during the day.  Well done to everyone, note your diaries with details of games and liaise with admin about availability. We will issue details of team admins in the next few days.

Update #5

14/9/2017

Short but important midweek update.

Quick reminder of parent information meeting tonight for U14/16, plus seniors if useful, 7pm, GSAL. Thanks also to those who are getting involved and helping! First junior matches start this weekend, so it has been busy to get paperwork done in advance of that. Senior matches start next weekend. Training continues each week.

Key messages from England Netball meeting with Yorkshire Academy athletes and parents - Jan Crabtree (National Academy Coach) and Liv Murphy (England Netball Performance Pathway Manager) delivered a presentation to athletes and parents from the Yorkshire Academy. Club Coaches were also invited so that they could feedback to their members. Much of the information contained in the presentation is available on the Pathway section of the England Netball website.
The key messages from the session were:
  • Netball is changing at all levels and in all regions so there is more choice available, but this can make decisions difficult. Change will continue, so athletes need to be resourceful in finding out about options and smart at making decisions.
  • Yorkshire is different because it doesn’t have a SuperLegaue franchise, but the situation of choice and change is not unique.
  • Emphasis from all needs to be on the individual needs of the athlete, and their personal circumstances, rather than seeing a set and single development route. The system is very flexible and routes to playing for England are very variable.
  • Clear message that the access to a pathway should never be closed if an athletes makes a bad decision and that there will be movement between different aspects, and that that is ok.
  • Access to National Academy from 2018 will be through screening through the NPL (U19)/NPFL (U17) competition structure – league and annual tournament (timing TBC). There will be no national screening day like in previous years. In exceptional cases, athletes maybe recommended for screening by a national selector from another competition eg schools/clubs or another sport.  Athletes can access the National Academy throughout the season rather than at just one or two points.
  • There is likely to be further change as SuperLeague franchises take increasing responsibility for the pathway and as England Netball undertake a review of counties and satellites as well.
  • England Netball ran through some scenarios of athletes in different circumstances to illustrate the point about different routes.

Good luck to our juniors starting their matches this weekend and to our athletes awaiting the outcome from county trials and to those trialling at Rhinos. Feeling like we are really getting back into the swing of things!

Update #4

Another quick update to follow now that we have training started for all age groups with U11 training today! Those running the Club have been very busy in the background making sure that all the extensive administration has been done accurately and on time! With well over 100 athletes, entering well over ten different leagues, with well over 200 matches being played across the season, you will appreciate that this is some task! Thanks to those who work hard to make this work effectively and to enable our athletes to benefit! Not to mention our coaches in the background planning sessions week in week out and managing a bunch of athletes each!

FIXTURES
Fixtures from the respective leagues continue to be received and put on the website.  We hope to have all these on the Google Calendar in the next couple of days, including Junior West Yorkshire. If you get asked for availability, please respond asap to make the coordination easier. Parents of younger athletes, see if you can bring your daughters to watch Premier or Northern League games when they are at Headingley Campus, as these are a good way to watch a great standard of netball locally!

CLUB HANDBOOK
I can’t emphasise enough the importance of everyone reading this. It contains must of what you need to know. Here is a link:
http://www.leedsathleticnetballclub.org.uk/club-info.html. Some good advice for us as parents in here in terms of how to support our athletes and help them manage their expectations and fulfil their potential etc! We don't always manage to behave well!!!

CLUB SQUADS
We will put these on the website next weekend, after most squads have had their second training session, although these will have the usual health warnings on them about subject to change/no guarantee of court time etc.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING/PARENT HELPERS
There will be an important meeting for parents of U14/16 (and of younger seniors) at GSAL on Thursday 15 September at 7pm, with Anna and Maggie. Athletes who are not training are welcome to attend. U12 and U11 parent information meetings will also be organised in the coming weeks. These meetings will emphasise all that is written in the Club Handbook and bring this to life. It is a great opportunity to ask the coaches questions and understand our approach to running the Club. It will also cover aspects of "off court" club development such as safeguarding and communications. If you speak to the coach after the meeting, please respect that others will want to do that too!

PARENT HELPERS
Immediately after this meeting, there will be an opportunity for all those who offered to help to see what roles remain to be filled and how people can help with the running of the club.

LEAGUE RULES
Please take a look at the rules for the league you are playing in! Links to most of the leagues are on the relevant page of the Club website. It is the athlete’s responsibility to understand these rules and comply with them. Parents also need to familiarise themselves with the code of conduct that is in the Handbook and on England Netball website. As a Club we are responsible for how our athletes and parents behave, if anyone contravenes the code of conduct it will be the Club Team in that league that will lose points!

FORMS AND FEES
If anyone (particular seniors) has any outstanding forms to complete and hand in, please bring them this week. Go on Club Info page of the website and print the Club form and the relevant EN form for your age.

GOOD LUCK/WELL DONE
Here’s hoping all those trialling for stuff this month (county, Leeds Rhinos etc) are successful. Good luck to Laura, Alice, Nat and Georgia off to England Camp at Loughborough next weekend.

Thank you, as ever, get in touch if you have any queries.

Update #3

5/9/2017

Third update and the new season has not yet even started! Lots to say, as usual! An eclectic mix of stuff!

FEES: Thank you very much for so many people paying fees, if you haven’t please do so asap. We will chase in the next couple of weeks, but it is great if we don’t have to!

FIXTURES: Fixtures from the respective leagues are now coming in thick and fast and we will endeavour to get them on the website calendar asap so that people can plan their lives! So far, we have Premier and Northern on there. We have just started to get the remaining senior leagues and these will be on the Google calendar later this week. We have no details of any junior fixtures as yet.

CLUB HANDBOOK: I am pleased to say that the updated version of the Club Handbook is on the Club Info page of the website, containing details of our coaching team and all other information that you need eg kit reminders. Please print this off and have a read and encourage your athlete to read! We are likely to announce squads for the season on about 16 September, eg A & B, and senior squads, although these will have the usual health warnings on them about subject to change/no guarantee of court time etc.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING/PARENT HELPERS: There will be a meeting for parents of U14/16/seniors at GSAL on Thursday 14 September at 7pm, with Anna and Maggie. U12 and U11 parent information meetings will also be organised in the coming weeks. These meetings will emphasise all that is written in the Club Handbook and bring this to life. It is a great opportunity to ask the coaches questions and understand our approach to running the Club. Immediately after this meeting, there will be an opportunity for all those who offered to help to see what roles remain to be filled and how people can help with the running of the club. In the meantime, Susie is talking to those who have already offered to help and we hope to be able to provide new contact details for each age group mid-September.

UMPIRING/COACHING/TABLE OFFICIALS: We are always keen to encourage our parents to get involved in the game, particularly where it helps to provide more and better quality opportunities for athletes. Information about these opportunities is on the Club Info page of the website. We have a specific opportunity coming up to learn about being a table official for higher performance games (eg Prem/SuperLeague/World Cup in Liverpool). This will be on Sunday 29 October at Leeds Beckett for the morning. Once this has been subsidised by Yorkshire Netball and Club, it will cost about £10 and be really valuable learning about the game and be a formal qualification! Let me know if you are interested, I will be asking parents of some of the older athletes, so be warned! Likewise, if any athletes want to volunteer eg as part of Duke of Edinburgh etc, then get in touch with Susie.

PATHWAY STUFF: We have lots of our athletes in the various pathways, either locally or further afield, which is a huge credit to the hard work of the Club and the athletes. There is a meeting between Yorkshire Netball and England Netball and various stakeholders on 11 September.  If there is any new information available, we will make sure that our coaches and athletes are informed. If anyone hasn’t already entered for Leeds Rhinos Netball and wants to, please see the link here: http://www.leedsrhinosnetball.co.uk/ There are camps for the younger athletes, as well as Academies for experienced players and hubs for newer athletes. All this complements Leeds Athletic Club activity.

GOOD LUCK/WELL DONE: Good luck to our athletes trialling in various activities in the coming weeks. Well done to our mini netballers in their tournament and to our Netball Night teams. Good luck to those starting new education stuff as well!

GETTING READY FOR THE SEASON AHEAD: Now is a good opportunity to be looking at league rules for the respective leagues that your athlete will be playing in. We don’t put these rules on our website because they are subject to change, but you can usually get them from the relevant website for the league.

AUSTRALIA COUNTDOWN:  We were blessed with the weather to make a great garden party for our lucky athletes travelling to Australia next year. With less than a year to go, the athletes spent time together eating, chilling and doing some great team games (thanks Lisa Fox!).  Inevitably we are having some changes to those who want to travel on this trip, there may be one place available in the coming week. If anyone is really interested, get in touch.

WATCHING NETBALL: Only 3 weeks to go to FASTFIVE and a great chance to watch some exciting netball in London. A few of our athletes/former athletes will be playing, Lucy and Rosie Harris, Nat Haythornthwaite, Imogen Allison, Jess Shaw etc.  There is also the Malawi test series to watch live, which is great for young athletes to go and learn whilst watching and enjoying a social. See if you can hook up within age groups and go in groups to make it even more fun!

TUESDAY NIGHT TRAINING: Our U12C training, for some of our U11 athletes, will start on 12 September. Assessment for this group will be for those currently attending the Sunday morning sessions.

TRAINING: Training is back on this week, if anyone has any outstanding forms to complete and hand in, please bring them this week.

KIT: Louise is ready to order kit, which does take a long time to come! Please get in touch with her if you need to order kit asap! I have copied her in so you have her email address!
