News Update #25

5/3/2018

Let’s hope that’s the end of the snow for this year and that it soon feels like Spring.  West Yorkshire fixtures were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday, fortunately Leeds Athletic Seniors did not have a match this week.

Performance
Our Prem team had to cancel the journey to Bristol to play Romans, disappointment all round as they were all up for a big match which will have a big impact on our league placing.  Northern however were at home in a local derby against Shipley who have ex Superleague and former Leeds Athletic players to select from and our undefeated Northern Squad came up with an awesome win 64-45. Well done everyone, thanks Jan for cool and calm coaching! The U16 West Yorkshire team were due to play Rothwell and there were four U12 teams due to be in action this weekend: U12 1 v Wakefield Wildcats; U12 2 v YMCA 1; U12 3 v Yorkshire Terriers 1; U12 4 v YMCA 2. But all fixtures were postponed due to the weather, so watch this space for rearranged dates.

On the search for tough worthwhile competition in preparation for Club Nationals the U14s travelled in the snow to Grangetown to play a tri event against Grangetown and Bury both of which are expecting to qualify for Nationals. The U16s crossed the Pennines also in snow and bad conditions to challenge the same clubs in a tri match in Bury. Huge thanks to Suzanne Beale and Rachel Train for organising these events, plus the coaches, because there is a lot of effort into creating these opportunities that can make a big difference to preparation for National Finals. In both events, our athletes did well and had lots of learning opportunities, using different combinations. The results were as follows:
  • U16s: Leeds v Grangetown 15-15 draw
  • Leeds v Bury 21-10 loss;
  • Leeds v Grangetown 21-16 win;
  • Leeds v Bury 20-13 loss
  • U14s: Leeds v Grangetown 30-23 lost:
  • Leeds v Bury 27-19 lost

In other netball
We had players in both NPL U21 and NSL squads in both LBoro and Wasps sides on Saturday. Next week, Yorkshire U19 NPL are in action v Severn Stars on 10th March 3pm at Huddersfield University, Leeds Athletic players Annie James, Maisie Bickerton, Charlotte Mannall, Laura Kelly, Molly Harris, Gwyn Wallis and Alice Harvey will be in action. Good luck to Francine in her coaching role with Yorkshire.

GSAL and QE are both in action in U19 this week in semi-finals of the ISNC Smile National Competition, with a view to qualifying for the final this coming Friday in what could be an all Yorkshire Final down in Essex! We have players in both teams, good luck everyone. We also have lots of players involved in the latter stages of the BUCS competition, good luck everyone.

Congratulations to Maisie Bickerton from our U16 who has been invited to Roses Academy Easter Camp. We are waiting to hear if any of our other athletes have been invited and will keep you posted as we get closer to the camp dates. Maisie will join: Anya, Chloe, Georgia, Annie, Laura, and Alice. We will also have athletes trialling for Roses U19 Summer Tour and for Roses Futures and Roses Full Time programme over Easter – good luck to everyone for their preparation for those trials as well! It was very unlucky for Alice Harvey, who should have in Dublin this weekend at Netball Europe, that the whole championship had to be cancelled because of the weather, so disappointing for all those athletes, coaches and organisers who had worked so hard to prepare and for everyone to miss that unique opportunity for international competition.
