News Update #10

28/10/2019

Well it was a successful weekend for our rugby team at the World Cup in Japan. So how did Leeds Athletic fair this week, with lots of young guns pushing their way through the senior ranks?

PERFORMANCE
Earlier in the week the U16s beat Stars 31-4 in the Tuesday Netball Nights League.  Our youngsters in the Wednesday Netball Nights lost 40-18 to a good, strong and physical Leeds Lightning by far the toughest match in this league so far.
Our Seniors were successful in the West Yorkshire League on Saturday, pitched against Wakefield Phoenix they pulled off a 51-40 win.
In the Senior Regional League match our girls totally ran the opposition into the ground. Up against a mature, physical Ripon Rockets side they came away with a clear win 57-32.
Many thanks to Marion who stood in to coach our Northern League team today. Sheffield Concord were the opposition 62-49 to us was the final score In the Prem1 League it was a tough encounter for our athletes competing for a win against Turnford. Our girls started out strong in quarter one and powered on to the end coming out with a 69-47 win.

News Update #9

20/10/2019

Another week into the 2019/20 season and another e mail from the West Yorkshire Junior Committee to ALL clubs, stressing the importance of removing jewellery before matches. Presumably as performance athletes, who take our sport seriously, Leeds Athletic members are not the offenders?

PERFORMANCE
Our Netball Nights team continued a winning streak this week beating a strong Thundercats 25-23 in a game that was close throughout.
On Saturday the West Yorkshire Seniors faced Hi Tech, always an intensely fought battle, the outcome was 66-52 to Leeds Athletic with a superb show of strength and determination.
Just Northern girls out in Senior competition this  Sunday, a good win for Jan Hemsley’s team against Seatonians at this away fixture, final result 51-37.
Round to the juniors now our U16s did us proud again finding the two teams unbeaten at the top of the league table. The U16A beat Birkenshaw Belles a stonking 57-3 despite the score line, the opposition never gave up against the onslaught of goals. With the U16B’s there was no doubt who was going to win here either, although our girls had to dig deep against Shipley resulting in a 33-23 win.
Wakefield Wildcats(1) were the challengers to our U14A’s but they came up short, our mighty efforts resulted in a super 31-10 win for us.  A tough challenge this week for our U14B team facing Huddersfield Giants(1), each quarter score was unbelievably close, despite not giving up for a single moment our girls just lost by one goal 19-20.
On to the 12’s with mixed results here, starting with the U12A team who faced Wakefield Phoenix(1) taking a convincing win by 35-8.  U12C played second in the league YMCA(1) so a tough call for our U11s playing up in this first division of the U12 league, they made a good game of it though, only one goal in it at half time finally losing 10-20. So to our U12D playing Calderdale(1) who were one position above them in the second division of the U12 league.  After an amazing show of determination and teamwork, the match was lost 3-11.

News Update #8

A great set of results for the club this weekend with many tough games going our way.

PERFORMANCE
Earlier in the week there were good wins for the Tuesday and Wednesday netball nights teams, both playing in adult leagues. Tuesday saw a final score of 37-9 v Whitcliffe Wildcats. Then on Wednesday our U14s smashed Leeds Medics 31-16 with 7 juniors aged 14.

On Sunday morning the U14B’s were up early, getting a good win against a strong Wakefield Wildcats, very close up to half time then easing through to 32-21 final score.

Also playing at 9am were the U16B team facing Huddersfield Giants (1) who were keen to take a win from us and it was tight right to the end but our girls came out on top 25-21.

The U12A and U12B teams clashed today in a game resulting in a 36-14 win to the A team.

Later the U16A team got a shock in the first quarter, when a powerful Wakefield Wildcats(1) pushed them to 11-9. Shock over the girls powered on to a great 50-17 win in the end.

Never giving up the U12C team battled against a stronger more mature Wakefield Phoenix(1) losing 9-20, tough but lots of learning.

It was a tense hard fought game for the U14A’s winning 31-17 v YMCA(1). Sounds easy judging by the final score, but it most certainly was a nail biter through to half time, our athletes fought for every ball and won out.

Our Prem team were playing away again v Cumberland final score was 52 - 35 to Cumberland again a very well fought match with Leeds bringing it back in the 3rd quarter but then let it slip in the 4th quarter.

AGM
The AGM has been rearranged to the 7th November 6.30pm at GSAL everyone is welcome to attend. Committee positions are up for re election and vacant position for Chairperson, social secretary and junior member need to be filled.

JEWELLERY

Jewellery has no place on the netball court for training or matches as all our athletes know. It is a danger to the individual and to others on court. Generally speaking it is not an issue with any of our performance athletes but here is an additional message from the league this week-

Hi Clubs
Can you please advise your athletes that they cannot play with taped ears to cover earrings.
All earrings need to be removed.
West Yorkshire Junior League

SPECTATE
As our juniors do not have matches on Sunday 27th October it is an opportunity for our youngsters to watch top seniors in action at Leeds Beckett against Turnford 11.30am. This game will be followed by the Northern match when our girls are pitched against Sheffield Concord, many of the athletes were U16s last year playing in this tough senior North of England clubs league.

NATIONAL SCHOOLS

There was no West Yorkshire Seniors match this week due to the county round of national schools netball finals, where lots of our girls could be seen playing for their schools. Well done to everyone from Leeds Athletic competing at this event and congratulations to those school teams who have qualified for the Regional round in January.

Teams should all have been assigned administrators, have training balls, match balls and kit bags. First matches are out of the way and recording and reporting scores making more sense.

PERFORMANCE
Tuesday brought another win for our Bradford Netball Nights team 17-6 the final outcome.
A close game for our Wednesday Netball Nights team winning 22-21 nice little celebration dance on our Facebook page if you care to look.
On Saturday our West Yorkshire Seniors played Alliance, losing 41-52 in a tough match.
Our Prem 1 team were at home for the first time this season playing Oaksway in an exciting match. Unfortunately although our girls played well and battled on they lost this tight encounter 51-56.
The Northern girls faced Riverside also the first home game this year. A cracking match but the experience of the opposition just swung it, resulting in a 49-51 loss.
Hi Tech were the fierce opponents for our young Senior Regional team.  They battled hard against the
experienced and physical opposition, final score 45-43 to LANC.
The U16A’s faired well winning their third game convincingly 46-17 against Yorkshire Terriers 1. Their pals playing in the U16B’s not to be out done played Wakefield Wildcats and won 26-23 in a closely contested match.
In the 14’s just a game for the B’s this Sunday v Yorkshire Terriers 1 a superb win 26-16.

FAREWELL
This week the club says goodbye and good luck to an outstanding member of our community, Chairperson, Mariana Pexton. Please see the message from her below-

💙🖤💙🖤💙🖤💙🖤💙
Just a quick one to let you know that I am resigning as Chair of Leeds Athletic, after 7 or so years in the role.

A few of us took the club on with very little structure and fewer teams and we’ve put much more structure and process to improve the organisation, administration, communication and profile of the Club. It’s been hard work, requiring countless hours of dedicated hard work organising trials each year and teams each week. I suspect I’ve written in the region of 300 Club Updates, with probably hundreds of tweets as well!

Leeds Athletic has grown through this period and been able to respond to help deliver the amazing netball vision that Anna Carter has. Introducing netball nights for juniors sounds a small thing, but it’s developed athletes really well. “Let’s plan a trip to Australia” Anna said, and sure enough those athletes (and coaches) had a trip of a lifetime!

As ever though, there’s always more to do to improve, especially to make the most of the opportunity that the growth of the game offers. But I’m ready to pass that baton to someone else to drive forward, leading the awesome team of volunteers, and working with the amazing coaching team.

The thing I’m proudest of is contributing to the development of so many girls, on and also off court, providing a context where they can thrive, be confident, sociable, well organised team players, and hopefully be the best netballers they can be. The thing I’ve enjoyed the most is working with such a great team of committed individuals who care about the club and the athletes.

Many of you will know that sadly I lost both parents in the last twelve months. I struggled to maintain my level of commitment to the club because of juggling some tough family stuff. Club colleagues have provided great support to me which I’ve really appreciated.

I’m going to take some time to do something for me and hope to be starting a Doctorate very soon, almost twenty years after I completed my Masters! Stepping away from Club will also allow me to spend more time with Daniel as well, and maybe head to Birmingham to watch Georgia in the odd game!

I wish the club the best of luck for the next phase of the journey, it’s in super hands with the coaching team and the admin team. Good luck to all the athletes, and if you’re a parent who isn’t involved, maybe look to get involved, it’s hard but rewarding!

💙🖤💙🖤💙🖤💙🖤💙

Mariana picked up Leeds Athletic by the heels seven years ago and has stood as Chairperson since that time. She has been the quiet voice of reason, meanwhile shouting the clubs praises and forging good relationships with members of the netball community. Reliable, visible and fair, an inspiration and a valued friend. I am sure club members, parents and friends will all want me to thank her for such a long and dedicated service to our club. Thank you Mariana and good luck in all you do, we are sorry to lose you as our Chairperson, but feel lucky you chose to volunteer at Leeds Athletic.

DISNEY
Exciting things are happening in the U14’s and U12’s.  A trip to Disneyland Paris for a netball festival is on the cards for 5th-9th April 2020.
Deposits are about to be taken - Disney have our initial booking.
