Match Report - Leeds Athletic 39 vs Sheffield Stormers 8

In training we had worked on moving through the three stages of defence and making positive decisions while defending. This paid off with a superb exhibition of defending throughout the team. While some of the play in this match might not have been as spectacular as in previous games this was a rock solid performance of great discipline and natural talent.

It was a slightly slow start, but with the defence so dominant it didn’t matter about the goals not piling up, a 13-2 first quarter lead was a good foundation. Anna G came on at GA for Georgia and slotted into the team well underlining her magnificent progress this year.  With Lucy Simpson and Lucy Burgin absolutely dominant in defence we extended the lead to 20-3 by half time.

Zoe came on at WA in the third with Katy switching to WD and there was some lovely link up play between Zoe, Georgia and Hannah with Lexy pulling all the strings in the centre. Indeed Georgia was absolutely brilliant, moving about the court with great athleticism.

In the fourth we tried a new combination with Ailsa – solid as ever – moving to C, Zoe to WD, Anna moving to GS in place of the Hannah, who had given another towering display, Lexy moving to GA and Georgia to WA.  Katy also took a well -earned rest after another all action yet really disciplined display. The combination yielded some fantastic attacking which was a joy to behold. Even at 39-8 in the final seconds the girls were desperate to reach 40 goals and a spectacular leap from Lexy off the court to palm the ball goalwards only just failed to come off.

Every player gave a terrific performance and one they should be very proud of.
