Match Report - Leeds Athletic 31 vs Wakefield Wildcats 19

Following our 21-12 victory in the West Yorkshire League, Leeds Athletic went into our regional fixture v Wildcats as favourites but with respect for our opposition (as they had beaten the impressive Giants in the previous round). After a scrappy opening few minutes - during which poor Georgia was flattened and winded - our passing settled and we started to dominate. We had a comfortable 9-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Wildcats came out ferociously in the second quarter and we were forced to raise our game considerably to achieve the convincing 19-7 score line by the half. Both sides defended well in the 3rd quarter (Leeds Athletic implementing our homework from John) and secured many interceptions but we managed to come out 3 goals up. In the final part of the game, we lost a little pace and made more unforced errors. Some super shooting from Wakefield enabled them to win that quarter by 3 goals.

The final score of 31-19 was a fair reflection of hard work from everyone in the Leeds team and our worthy opponents. Hannah shot superbly with one spectacular goal in particular attracting gasps of admiration from the balcony. Georgia demonstrated resilience and speed under some fierce defending to work the circle brilliantly. A versatile Beth scored some fabulous goals and defended with efficiency. Molly displayed wonderfully safe hands to take some remarkable catches before going on to feed the circle. Katy worked hard on the attacking and defensive wings and at the circle edges. Ailsa worked Wildcat’s WA tirelessly, forcing errors and held balls, most importantly, on the centre pass. Lucy S – without her usual partner, Lucy B, in the defensive circle – used her agility to tremendous effect throughout the match. Lindsey was fantastic at the back too and evidenced how much she has improved this season.

Thank you to John for coaching us this morning, to Mariana for managing us, to Sarah for scoring and to Wildcats for a challenging game. Also, thank you to everyone for their cancer charity donation.
